On Wednesday May 29, representatives of the UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS, were present at the SOMOSGAY Center at the end of collecting information about the work of the organization, the human rights approach in the fight against HIV, in addition to establishing ideas about cooperation between the two institutions.
Dr. Alberto Stella, the UNAIDS Coordinator for Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, Lina Nykanen, Advisor on Human Rights, Gender and Community Mobilization at UNAIDS and Dr. Beatriz Cohenca, UNAIDS representative in Paraguay, met with members of SOMOSGAY to discuss joint strategic actions that the organization develops towards the advancement of human rights of LGBT people in our country.
Representatives of UNAIDS met at the headquarters of the SOMOSGAY Community Center and the new Kuimba'e Clinic. Future projects to be undertaken in the medium and long term were reported as well.
With this visit, the importance of dealing with the commitment to strengthen actions for human rights of people living with HIV, their families and their social environment were stressed, in order to cope with the epidemic communally, with a focus on rights and friendly health services for all people .
UNAIDS is an innovative partnership within the United Nations that leads and inspires the world in achieving universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support to HIV. SOMOSGAY in their hard work to stop the HIV epidemic, recognized this approach as a key support in starting new ventures and initiatives for data generation and increased knowledge for Paraguayan society.
