On November 25 of 2009, during the Week of Gay Fight Against HIV/AIDS, will be at 7pm in the Department of Rights of the Universidad Columbia del Paraguay, a conference and later a debate, on the vulnerability of human rights due to homophobia in Paraguay. Simon Cazal, from SOMOSGAY will participate in the conference as a guest speaker.

Students majoring in Law at the Universidad Columbia del Paraguay, covered the theme of Homophobia, in the curriculum of the subject “Human Rights” with the support of SOMOSGAY.
The conference besides exploring the vulnerations to the rights of people in regards to their sexual orientation, present the plans of SOMOSGAY will be undertaking immediately to reform the laws that are needed to guarantee the full validity of the human rights to the citizens, and in this particular case, the LGBT citizens.
Studying Law at the Universidad COlumbia del Paraguay, through their Clinic of Human Rights, has offered assistance to SOMOSGAY in designing better these plans and accompany some cases that the organization decides to bring to justice in order to collect case law and make a contribution to the enhancement of laws in that aspect.
The main topic for debate in profound is the possibility of the reform of the Civil Code to comply with the constitutional order of eliminating all the barriers that discriminate people due to their sexual orientation, by allowing same sex marriage and recognize the union of people of the same gender.
The possibility to access to marriage as an institution that recognizes the union is, without doubt, on the topics of our time and one of the main demands of the organizations of the LGBT movement of the region and the world. Beyond the critiques that we could do individually or institutionally to marriage as a civil institution, its a right that we all should be able to access in the base of equality to the laws.
Similar activities to this are of great interest and importance to SOMOSGAY in the compliance of its mission to better the life quality of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders in Paraguay.
