SOMOSGAY, represented by Simon Cazal, was invited to present and defend the regional project designed by ASICAL, the Association for Integral Health and Citizenship in Latin America, to be presented in a contest at the 10th Round of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
The design of this regional project assembled a notable technical team that takes on board the broad experience of ASICAL in its work area: improve health and citizenry to gay males through the empowerment of their organizations. The presentation of the project took place in front of the Mechanism of Country Coordination of Brazil, a group composed of representatives to the government, civil organizations and from the private sector, organized in a work table that designs and executes projects presented to the Global Fund.
At the presentation realized in the brazilian capital, the support of the president to the Brazilian LGBT Association (ABGLT), Mr. Toni Reis, was determinant to achieve successfully the approval of the project in Brazil.
SOMOSGAY works jointly with ASICAL in the development of this proposal and in this matter, its Director Simon Cazal, has handled the support of Paraguay in this proposal through the endorsement given by the MCP Paraguay to it. Mr. Cazal has participated in the consult that took place in Panama City last June, the meeting in Lima in August of 2010, and has given support to in this presentation held in Brazil on the past Tuesday August 10th.
It is expected that this solid proposal if it is approved, contributes to Paraguay an important technical and financial support that improves the response of our country to the HIV pandemic in gay males. It is important to highlight the fact that one of the reasons that move the presentation of this regional project and that adds Paraguay to it, is the low inversion of resources that our country gives to HIV prevention among gay males, even though they are the most affected by HIV in our country and the region.
SOMOSGAY expects to use the support to drive a greater and better response by the Paraguayan State to this problem that affects around 9% of the gay population in the country, in contrast of the 0,9% of the general population.
ASICAL will present this proposal with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), HIVOS, the Dutch Agency of Support, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the MSM Global Forum and the Health Research Institute in Mexico; with these and other strategic partners the proposal constructed presents the concrete experience of ASICAL in the design, development and implementation of key actions to improve the health of the gay male population mainly.
SOMOSGAY is proud to collaborate with this important initiative, thanking ASICAL for the confidence placed in our experience. SOMOSGAY expects that once this proposal is approved, it will give momentum to its mission of improving the response given to HIV through effective actions against homophobia and the defense of the people affected by this virus.
