SOMOSGAY will work with the PRONASIDA to conduct a seroprevalence study in gay men in the areas of Asunción and the Central Department. The objective of the study is to reach a sample of 794 men, in order to project these results nationally. This information will be used in the design of interventions framed in the national response by the State to HIV epidemic.
In that matter, on the morning of Thursday 23rd of January at the Paraguayan LGBT Center, representatives of the National Programme for Control of HIV, AIDS and STIs (PRONASIDA), including Dr. Gladys Lopez, Director of Laboratory of the PRONASIDA, Dr. Gloria Aguilar, Liliana Gimenez, head of the Department of Education and Ramon Gaona PRONASIDA, member of strategic Information Department , met with the team of SOMOSGAY to define details and strategies for carrying out the work study.
In Paraguay, as in the entire region of Latin America, gay men are the group most affected by this epidemic because of the stigma and discrimination that have contributed to deny their existence in the field of public health. The lack of scientific and anthropological studies to date have generated a lack of government action to ensure access to programs of prevention and treatment of HIV.
SOMOSGAY supports the PRONASIDA in conducting this study with the purpose of being successful, and thus, provide key scientific information to stop the spread of the HIV epidemic in our country. This also indicates the way that the Paraguayan State should continue so as to improve the quality of life of people living with HIV, especially in the most affected communities.
The team SOMOSGAY says the path to Paraguay with zero discrimination and zero new HIV cases requires the advances in scientific, timely and accurate information.
