SOMOSGAY congratulates the 44 MP that voted for the rejection of the homophobic project of law by the MP Lopez Chavez. Such law prohibited the entry and stay of homosexual persons in the permanent staff of the Air Force and National Police. Hence the polemic document was sent to the archives, regardless of the insistence of Jose Lopez Chavez, the presenter of the project who pretended the approval of this law. We consider the result as an clear demonstration of the advance of Paraguay toward the path of proclaimed equality since the letter of foundation as a Republic.
SOMOSGAY has acted to achieve the rejection of the homophobic project of law, calling all MP to reflect on the adverse impact of homophobia in the society. In this labour, SOMOSGAY has been supported by individuals who without doubt make a difference in the legislature. Several activists from SOMOSGAY met in front of the headquarters of the Parliament with signs and flags in protest of the homophobic law.
Particularly, SOMOSGAY would like to thank the steps taken by MP Olga Ferreira de Lopez, who has showed ethic and unstoppable commitment to Human Rights in Paraguay, with her actions taken on this sad and homophobic initiative.
Furthermore, SOMOSGAY wants to thank all journalists that gave space for a rich and democratic debate, bringing valid opinions to all citizens. These opinions are in favor of a country without discrimination and free of homophobia.
SOMOSGAY wishes to celebrate along with the citizens the gay, lesbian, trans, bi and straight equality, on Monday June 28th. This date is remembered as the day of International Gay Pride, where we will be celebrating at the Plaza de la Democracia, along with the citizens of Asuncion, the advance of equality for all paraguayans.
