Given the recent statements emerged from the Catholic hierarchy on the discussions that took place during the Extraordinary Synod of Families -in which more than 270 bishops discussed and alleged "changes" in families-, SOMOSGAY considered important to clarify that the findings on "changes in the family" is not reflected in any official document from the Vatican; and therefore, do not affect the dogma or the positions of the Catholic hierarchy.
We joined the position of the regional movement to recognize that the refusal to recognize changes in marriage and families of sexual diversity continues placing the Catholic hierarchy in the field of discrimination and segregation. It is also surprising that in 2014, most of these Catholic authorities continue to insist that sexual orientation is a choice, calling it a sin and stating that this constitutes an outrageous and humiliating act.
In this regard, Simon Cazal, Co-Founder of SOMOSGAY stated that "although it is unfortunate the misunderstanding that occurs due to recent unofficial statements from the Extraordinary Synod of Families, it is a good opportunity to raise a more open debate about the denial of the Catholic hierarchy to the lives of millions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people".
With regard to the statements of Bishop Medina -a local authority of the Church in Paraguay-, where he calls LGBT people sick, Cazal said that "the positions of the Bishop is a reflexion of an older time and an earlier era, with all the limitations that it presents." Finally, about the statements and invitation of Bishop Ramon Mongelos to "homosexuals"; Cazal said "The Bishop’s invitation is appreciated on our part and we invite all our catholic fellows, servers, priests, bishops and cardinals, to come out and show that our diversity still exists in the harshest places. A life in the closet is a life of suffering. The release of our LGBT brothers and sisters in the churches is the way to true reconciliation."
