Leaders from the organization SOMOSGAY will attend the attend the 5th ILGA (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersexual Association) REGIONAL CONFERENCE in Latin America and the Caribbean. SOMOSGAY is the paraguayan entity affiliated to the aforementioned association and will attend to the most important meeting the of the lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual movement to take place in the city of Curitiba (PR), Brazil, from January 26th to 31st of 2010.
Almost 400 activists in defense of LGBT (Lesbiasn, gays, bisexuals and transgenders) people from 35 countries will meet to discuss the different aspects of the protection of the citizens and fight against the prejudices and homophobia.
ILGA is global federation that gathers the local and national groups dedicated to the promotion and protection of equality of rights to lesbians, gays, bisexuals, cross dressers, transexuals and intersexuals (LGBTI) around the globe. Founded in 1978, ILGA has among its members, more than 670 organizations, including small communities and national groups, which represents over 110 countries across all continents.
This event will discuss human rights for LGBT people in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). In the LAC region, in the last few years, several advances have taken place such as the decriminalization of homosexuality in Ecuador, Nicaragua, Chile and Panama. Nevertheless, there are eleven countries (Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Santa Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago) where homosexuality is considered a crime, which shows the urgent need of the movement and the actions of the governments in the fight of this and other challenges. The conference will be attended by representatives from 8 of these 11 countries and strategies of decriminalization will be discussed.
In the ceremony the presence of the following authorities was confirmed: Minister Paul Vannuchi, for the Special Secretariat of Human Rights of the Presidency, Senator Fatima Cleide, Coordinator of the Congressmen Front to the LGBT Citizens in the Senate, the Congressman Jose Genoino, Coordination of the Congressmen Front to the LGBT Citizens to the Chamber, Mr. David RAZU Aznar, President to the Commission of Human Rights at the Legal Assembly of the Distrito Federal de Mexico, Dr. Checker - Deputy Coordinator of the United Nations on HIV/AIDS in Brazil, Eduardo GUtierrez - Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Brazil, Dr. Pamela Bermudez - Panamerican of Health/World Health Organization in Brazil.
Other members of the LGBT movement that will also attend the event are: Billy Ulrich - Vice President of the InterPride Operations and President to the InterPride International Committee of LGBTI Human Rights, Gloria Careaga - General Secretary of ILGA, Belissa Andia Perez - Secretary for Trans ILGA, Amaranta Gomez Regalado - Secretary for Trans ILGA for Latin America and the Caribbean, Beto de Jesus - Secretary of ILGA for Latin America and the Caribbean, Toni Reis - General Coordinator of the Local Organizing Committee of the Fifth Conference of ILGA-LAC and Rafaellu Wiest - Presing of DIgnity and the Fifth Conference of ILGA-LAC.
In addition, a message from President Lula wil be given to the participants of the Conference which will be read by Deputy Dr. Rosinha (PT-PR), a member of the Parliamentary Front of LGBT Citizens.
The Conference is supported by the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), Global Fund for Women, Special Secretariat for Human Rights, Special Secretariat on Women's Policies and the Special Secretariat for the Promotion of Racial Equality of the Presidency, The Department of STI, AIDS, Viral Hepatitis of the Health Ministry, Government of the Parana State, the Government of the City of Curitiba and Itaipu Binational.
