Simon Cazal attended the 35th Meeting of the Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) of UNAIDS in Geneva, Switzerland, from 9 to 11 of December. Cazal, as the official delegate from Latin America and the Caribbean. In this opportunity, Cazal met with Member States, co-sponsors and civil society observers to propose recommendations for concrete actions along the three-day meeting.

As part of the meeting, and as a result of the ongoing work by global activists, UNAIDS’ Executive Director Michel Sidibé called attention to join efforts to triple the budget throughout the investments on HIV for NGOs, in order to accelerate the next phase of the global response to HIV with a new strategy called "Fast Track".

Meanwhile, the Brazilian government announced that all member States of the MERCOSUR signed a commitment to fight HIV. This commitment includes raising the proportion of people who know their HIV status up to 90%. Paraguay, as part of this block, also pledged to increase the number of people on treatment up to 90%, as currently, this number rises only about 40%.

The signing of an historic agreement between UNAIDS and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was also big news during the meeting. This agreement will set the Fast Track as a priority in the strategies financed and supported by the Global Fund and guarantees the provision of technical support from UNAIDS to the new funding model.

The world is embarking on a Fast-Track strategy to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. To reach this visionary goal after three decades of the most serious epidemic in living memory, countries will need to use the powerful tools available, hold one another accountable for results and make sure that no one is left behind.

SOMOSGAY is committed to being part of the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board, the main governing body of the joint team, to ensure that these objectives are met in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as in the rest of the world.
