Sergio Lopez, representing SOMOSGAY, attended the 1st Global Forum on Youth Policies, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from October 28-30. This forum was aimed at raising the debate on youth policies, building a common understanding of the needs and justifications for intersectoral approaches to youth policies and developing principles for the development of comprehensive youth policy.
Marking the twenty-second anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth, with renewed commitments to public policies on youth, this forum was a milestone in the definition of youth policy in the XXI century. This global event was organized jointly by the Office of Youth Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the United Nations Development Programme, UNESCO and the Council of Europe, with the support of youthpolicy.org, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sport of Azerbaijan.
Throughout the Forum, bringing together more than 700 participants from 165 countries -including Paraguay, and with a strong participation and youth ministers and experts, activists, representatives of civil society, representatives of agencies UN and international and regional organizations, youth policies were discussed and debated through three different pillars (thematic, structural and specific to each region). The Forum responded to the crucial importance of working youth policy with a holistic perspective, with a clear and concise approach to human rights.
"We are confident that a development agenda that does not provide equal rights and opportunities for young people is an unfinished agenda," said the representative of SOMOSGAY during one of the breakout sessions. "The inclusion, empowerment and participation of our most affected communities are key to the design and implementation of these youth policies. Our States can not and should not do anything to the young people without young people," he said.
Thus, SOMOSGAY has become one of the key organizations in advancing public youth policies in Paraguay, committed to further promote and support the implementation of the Global Programme of Action for Youth and the promotion of youth policies and the broader development policies, particularly in the context of the agenda for the Post-2015 development. Also, SOMOSGAY’s participation in this historic Global Forum allows the strengthening collaboration and regional alliances and regions in the field of public youth policies worldwide.
