On Monday May 17, International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, SOMOSGAY will conduct the public "Kiss-in Paraguay 2010" where several gay, lesbian and straight couples will kiss in front of the National Congress. In this occasion a letter will be given to the senators and members of the parliament to request the fight against the violence and discriminations connected to sexual orientation or gender identity. This activity will be open to the public and all gay, lesbian and straight couples will be able to join to demonstrate with a kiss unites us and that should not be a reason for discrimination.

SOMOSGAY, as part of the global initiative in Paraguay through the "Kiss-in Paraguay 2010" seeks to sensibilize citizens to take advantage of this day to live with hope, diversity and world peace, without distinction of sex, gender or any other type.
On May 17 of 1989 the World Health Organization established that homosexuality is not a mental disorder or disease, but a legitimate expression of human sexuality. Despite of this, there is still a prejudice existent as of today. Since then, the date is remembered, in a global activity, organized by the International Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual and Intersex Association (ILGA) and the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia Committee (IDAHO) who celebrate this day through actions (exhibits, movie projections, debates, shows, manifestations, tv or radio programs, or others), implemented by individuals, associations, institutions, municipalities and governments in more than 60 countries, in all continents, seeking to sensibilize the citizens of their respective countries.
Homophobia, restates a culture of rejection towards people with diverse sexual preferences. SOMOSGAY seeks to banish homophobia; this irrational thought towards gays, lesbians, transexuals or transgenders, that tries to stigmatize these groups, put them in an inferior condition and take away rights from them, acting merely on the profound ignorance.
In at least 80 countries homosexual acts are condemned by the laws. In some of these theor legal texts suggest imprisonment. In seven countries death penalty can be applied.
In Paraguay, even though homosexuality is not condemned in the criminal code, the discriminations and physical threats or attacks multiply: these affect even more to transexual people, particularly exposed, and to lesbians who are particularly invisible.
SOMOSGAY is an organization that seeks to help in the construction of a Paraguay where homophobia, sexism, inequality and violence are all part of history.
