SOMOSGAY makes a campaign of collective artistic expression called "Graffities for Equality." The campaign consists of painting art murals expressing different aspects of the diverse Paraguay and the building of a more just, equal and inclusive society. The first mural will be painted in the Community Center, located on Independecnia Nacional 1032 and Manduvirá. During the making of the murals, the participants will receive training in urban art, including drawing workshops , painting and graffiti.
This campaign is carried out with the support of the European Union, the Fundacion Triangulo and AHF (AIDS Healthcare Foundation) and has the artistic direction of Oz Montanía; a Paraguayan known graffiti artist who works as an art director in the world and performs urban interventions , besides painting at international festivals and events.
In tribute to LGBT rights activist, Harvey Milk, the "Milk Hall" of the Community Center will be the first to have the realization of his murals. Harvey Milk was one of the most important activists of the modern LGBT movement. In addition to contributing greatly to the current LGBT movement building, he was also the first openly gay councilman to be elected as a member of the City Council of San Francisco, California. Harvey Milk became one of the biggest icons and LGBT activism until he was murdered in a homophobic crime that also killed the mayor of San Francisco in 1978, he fought for the ideal of a society free of homophobia. His famous line "Hope will never be silenced" is part of the commemorative mural works. Harvey worked with Gilbert Baker in creating the rainbow flag as a symbol of the LGBT movement, representing unity in diversity, a powerful message of hope that continues to guide the movement to this day.
The making of the graffiti is open to all community members who want to participate. They can communicate by telephone (021) 495-802 or approaching the SOMOSGAY Center (Independencia Nacional 1032 and Manduvirá) between the hours of 2 pm to 10 pm.
