With the presence of Deputies Victor Rios and Rocio Casco, on Thursday, June 5 at 9:00 am. the launch of the Paraguayan LGBT Handbook took place at the esplanade of the National Congress of Paraguay.
To start, Simon Cazal, director of SOMOSGAY noted that handbook is being published in order to "become familiar with concepts and words that serve for some tensions that are part of our everyday lifes, gain tolerance and not violence as occurred some days, in front of the South American Football Confederation, during the act of the General Assembly of the OAS. "
Deputy Victor Rios said this "is part of the culture war that we have to carry out, not only in Paraguay, but in Latin American societies, crossed by very atavistic prejudices." "I congratulate you for the courage, the main contribution to the cultural evolution that enriches a society, I find this to be an important aspect, the struggle for the senses, a struggle for the meanings of words, because it is serious misrepresentation of the concepts" said the congressman. Also, said that the repression, police violence, is a very serious matter. "For me, it is not pro-life despising the diversity of life; it is not pro-family, despising the diversity that one can have on family compositions. I'm liberal, philosophically, ethically and by affiliation a liberal. I'm Liberal and one of the basic premises of a liberal, is tolerance, "concluded the Deputy.
Congresswoman Rocío Casco congratulated the organization SOMOSGAY for the launch of LGBT Handbook. "It is important for the interaction with public entities, with the unions, the press, which has an important role in the dissemination and education to discuss as a society about sexual diversity. Also on how we will address the issue. The State must be present to ensure the right for all. This is the concept that we stand for and we have to work, otherwise, mythological and fanciful concepts are mixed with a social reality that we manage in our country. The State can not ignore the situation," he concluded.
Also on Wednesday was held a panel discussion with journalists and the general public at 08:00 pm. at the headquarters Paraguayan LGBT Community Center, located on Independencia Nacional and Manduvirá 1032; were journalists Enrique Vargas Peña and Daniela Candia, Simon Cazal, executive director of SOMOSGAY were part of the panel. Also present were journalists Cristhian Núñez and Manuel Cuenca.
The Launch of the Paraguayan LGBT Handbook, was performed with the desire to help to create a clearing in the various public spaces of interaction of people in the gay, lesbian, bi and trans (LGBT) community. While it is undeniable that there has been progress in this regard, but in many areas continues to make use of not only confusing and inefficient but highly discriminative and violent vocabulary. A common example is the way in which LGBT people are still represented in the media as stereotypical characters being mocked.
The treatment with the LGBT community is multidimensional, reflecting our diversity. This diversity becomes increasingly visible to our families and couples. Therefore, it remains necessary and that the decision-makers, health workers, police, education, business and journalists, communicators and opinion, to distinguish properly between opposing views on LGBT issues. We find ourselves in an era where the expressions and discourses that are generated on the lives of LGBT people and how to approach that they deserve necessarily intersect with family, faith, war, politics, health, economy, sports, entertainment and various other topics.
