Simon Cazal, Co-Founder of SOMOSGAY, has been selected as the NGO delegate representative of the Latin American region in the Programme Coordinating Board of UNAIDS (PCB). The PCB is the most important political HIV-related forum worldwide. This delegation is relevant for the effective inclusion of community voices and to ensure the active participation of civil society. Its members represent the perspectives of civil society -including people living with HIV- within the UNAIDS’ policies and programs.

The Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) is the governing body of UNAIDS. It is composed of 22 Member States (voting), 11 co-sponsors of the United Nations that make up the program Joint Program of UNAIDS and the NGO Delegation, consisting of one delegate and one alternate representative from each regions: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and North America.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) was the first program of the United Nations to have formal representation of civil society in its composition. This space represents an unique opportunity for activists and advocates committed to making a difference in policy implementation of HIV and AIDS in their regions.

The mission of this NGO Delegation is to bring to the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board the perspectives and expertise of people living with, at risk of, vulnerable to, marginalized by, and affected by HIV and AIDS, as well as civil society and nongovernmental entities actively involved in the response, in order to ensure that their human rights, and equitable, gender-sensitive access to comprehensive HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support services are reinforced by the policies, programmes, strategies and actions of the Joint Programme and Co-Sponsors.

SOMOSGAY celebrates this opportunity to be part of building a world in which all stakeholders; civil society, governments and international organizations meet the challenges of HIV/AIDS. We believe that by combining the collective effort to generate policies that are creative, equitable, comprehensive and effective, we can find solutions that can lead us to a world free of HIV, stigma and discrimination.
