On the morning of Friday, June 26, the Supreme Court of the United States, after a close vote of 5-4, issued a ruling that nationalizes marriage equality, making it legal in its 50 states, adding to the list in the number 22, worldwide.
Now, all States "are obliged to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples under Amendment 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality of all citizens before the law”.
President Obama praised the Supreme Court's ruling, saying it arrived "like a thunderbolt" after a series of back-and-forth battles over same-sex marriage. He says the ruling "will strengthen all of our communities" by offering dignity and equal status to all same-sex couples and their families.
Sergio Lopez, activist of SOMOSGAY said "the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States not only gives same-sex couples the right to marry, but this decision is also consolidated as a historic victory of the LGBT movement in the country. In Paraguay, while our state does not recognize all families as equal, with the same rights, the same dignity and equal respect; there will be a strong message from the public authorities affirming that these families do not deserve the same respect and rights”.
"We celebrate this victory of the LGBT movement in the United States, and we hope that all the necessary protection for all families will be given to each and one of them across the country. We believe that such historical events will be replicated as a domino effect in other countries, considering that, just now, Ireland and Mexico had set examples of legal equality for all. We have a long path to walk, but there are winds of change, we are now achieving social justice” finalized Lopez.
