From 16-20 May, the city of New York received activists, organizations and working groups during the second round of negotiations for the High Level Meeting on HIV to be held from 8 to 10 June at the United Nations.

Sergio Lopez, activist of SOMOSGAY, participated in the various meetings with representatives of the permanent missions of Latin American countries to the UN, including Argentina, Belize and Colombia, as well as the roundtable meeting with the LGBT Core Group, co-organized jointly with the Danish mission on the morning of Tuesday, May 17.

Along with a block of activists from Latin America and the Caribbean, strategies and key concerns were worked towards a more strategic language in the Political Declaration, including clear targets and commitments to human rights protection for the most affected communities (key populations) and ensuring the funding required to support communities and their actions in countries "in transition".

"While the socio-political landscape has changed considerably in our region, we note that there is some progress and victories that are impossible to undo" Sergio mentioned in relation to the outcome of the coordination meetings with Latin missions. "These achievements, however, do not take away the fact that we still need to push a battle for the full recognition of our rights as gay men, transgender women and sex workers, especially in relation to an HIV response that leaves no one behind, for real".

Over the next couple of weeks, the rounds of informal readings and negotiations will continue to draft the Political Declaration to be adopted by the United Nations in June.

SOMOSGAY will continue to work in coordination with the region and other strategic partners to move forward with proposals based on discussing systemic inequalities in our countries to contribute to an HIV response that goes beyond numbers and that is aimed at eliminating social enablers that keep our entire communities at higher risk.
