On Sunday April 21 general elections in Paraguay is performed. According to statements in the media, several candidates at different positions in the executive and legislative branches take first positions for or against marriage equality and combating discrimination against LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) in Paraguay.
IN FAVOR
One of the movements that were notable for supporting equal rights for LGBT people is the Avanza País Party which postulated as president Mario Ferreiro, a very well-known journalist. In their equal rights agenda mentions the issue of homophobia and discrimination issue and the issue of HIV as a public health problem. In the lists of senators is Dr. Ivan Allende, who currently serves as Health Manager of SOMOSGAY. Committed to the struggle of a society without stigma, without discrimination, inclusive, broad and tolerant.
Rocío Casco, candidate for Deputy for Avanza País, actively participated and presented projects that protected the community against discrimination during her tenure as Councillor to Asuncion. Karina Rodriguez as a Representative for Avanza Pais drove in her tenure as Vice Minister for Youth and recently as Councillor of Asunción, public policies that promoted the elimination of all forms of discrimination. In the media she declared that gay marriage needs to be a reality in our country where Paraguayans have the right to freely choose with whom to share his life.
Furthermore, Lilian Soto, candidate for the Presidency of the Republic by the Movement Kuña Pyrenda, told the media the need for approval of equal marriage for Paraguayan society .
AGAINST
The liberal candidate for President of the Republic, Efrain Alegre said that marriage can only be between man and woman, if it is between two different sexes is a "question of nature". Notably, Federico Franco, current President and Efraín Alegre's supporter, had also made homophobic statements against the LGBT community. The candidate for deputy from the Liberal Party, John Bogado Tatter , said he is not in favor of the legalization of gay marriage in Paraguay.
The most recent statements on marriage between same sex were expressed by the candidate to the Presidency of the Republic, Horacio Cartes. He referred as abnormal to those people with different sexual orientation, he compared LGBT people with monkeys and that if marriage equality was approved in our country he believes it could be the end of the world. In a radio interview he was asked what he would do if your som tells him that he wants to marry a man, "I 'll shoot myself in the balls honestly, (my son) lacks nothing," was the response of candidate.
Arnoldo Wiens, candidate for Senator for the Colorado Party and former Protestant pastor of Family Worship Center , was an on screen presenter in Red Guarani , where he campaigned against LGBT with the excuse of "preserving the Paraguayan families".Another candidate for Deputy of the Colorado Party is Oscar Tuma who emphasized that "We must not be warm at all, and my answer is no, I am opposed to marriage between persons of the same sex, you feel affection for the same sex is accepted, but not we cannot legalize the union." The candidate for deputy also for the Colorado Party, Hugo Ramirez, who during his tenure as Councilman of Asuncion filed a bill to regulate the information about "homosexuality in the media" for allegedly careful management of information within a schedule child protection .
José Manuel Dome , who sought re-election as senator for the UNACE Party, stated that certain sectors promote marriage of persons of the same sex to destroy "the natural." Also by UNACE Party, Fabiola Oviedo , candidate for Representative, expressed her rejection to equal marriage because "we must preserve God, family and country. "
The candidate for president of the Patria Querida party, Miguel Carrizosa, stated that "people raped in the barracks would become homosexuals." Carlos Becker, candidate for Deputy of Patria Querida, indicated that he accepts affection among LGBT people but he does not share their marriage.
HOMOPHOBIC MESSAGES OF CANDIDATES
From SOMOSGAY we express our solidarity with the thousands of Paraguayans youth and adults who have to suffer because of these malicious and cruel statements as they have been expressed by various political candidates in these elections. We believe that hatred and violence will not contribute to our society. Love , solidarity and support are the values we should cultivate within our families to build a more democratic and egalitarian Paraguay as that we all want .
