On a visit to Paraguay, Pedro Zerolo, councilor to Madrid from Spain's Socialist Worker's Party (PSOE), party of the Spanish government, met with Simon Cazal to discuss lines of work towards human rights equality and fighting homophobia.
Zerolo, the main reference in the Spanish LGBT movement, was one of the most combative activists in favor of same-sex marriage that was achieved in Spain. He was president of the COGAM, (Madrid’s Gay and Lesbian Coordination) and founder of the FELGBT (Spanish Federation OF Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgenders). Currently he is Madrid’s Council and is also at the Secretariat of Social Movements of the party at the Spanish government.
During his meeting with Cazal, Zerolo recognized the intention of the Spanish government to strengthen the fight in favor of equality, against homophobia and sexism in Latin-American countries, urging him to continue such fight in Paraguay.
“The LGBT movement needs real leaders that besides standing up, are able to uphold capacity to question the authorities and other social partners. It is useless to fight for equality from closed organizations that are limited to delivering services aiming to replace the government”, said Zerolo.
Zerolo also, as ambassador to UNAIDS for Latin-American and the Caribbean region, said that the Spanish government will support the implementation of activities that promote the prevention of HIV in gay men, with Simon Cazal as Paraguayan referent for such tasks. In reference to his support with Cazal, Zerolo explained that “when conflicts arise, and these reverse the tide of all of those who fight for equality in all parts of the world, We, as activists, have to focus in working to transform our societies to make them more equal instead of reproducing hegemonic models focused only in the search of individual interests to the detriment of collective interests.”
