At the headquarters of LGBT Community Center of Asuncion, on Saturday November 16 was held the National Conference of Parents and Relatives of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans) Youth from 9am. The meeting was attended by Marcela Ordenes, an activist and representative of the Unified Movement of Sexual Minorities (MUMS) in Chile and more than 30 parents, relatives and friends of LGBT people, who could find a space to share their skills, fears and experiences.

The Programme of the meeting developed various themes that allowed to generate dialogue tools among participants. "Institutionally, from our position as SOMOSGAY, we do consider the family as the fundamental basis of our society, and that is why we offer this space to all Paraguayan families looking to change the reality in which we live today. All families must be respected and protected before the law," argued Sergio Lopez, General Director of SOMOSGAY at the opening act.
During the beginning of the meeting , the lawyer Beatriz Romero held a workshop with the theme "The social construction of gender and its implications for discrimination", which highlighted the importance of the fact that the young people are recognized as self subjects with a particular non-heterosexual sexuality and support needed further boost from the family. In addition, Ms. Romero also spoke with parents about how gender equality allows women and men to develop fully, freely and responsibly more equally.
The Psychologist Dominica Vera spoke about Diverse Sexualities and explaining to the parents that the fact that people choose to live their sexuality beyond heterosexuality is not a new "phenomenon" or a trend, and that is also increasingly widespread that people recognize themselves publicly as lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans. "People can choose how to live their sexuality , but can not choose or change the way you feel," he said.
During the meeting further discussions were developed around issues related to HIV , its history and basic knowledge that must be managed to break the stigma in society. These discussions were guided by Dr. Margarita Villafane, Focal Point for HIV in Paraguay of the Pan American Health Organization , followed by Dr. Ivan Allende , Director of the Kuimba'e Clinic, who delivered a workshop on Sexually Transmitted Infections focused to parents.
This activity, conducted under the project "Araroky Tava: favorable social environments for active youth participation to exercise their human rights" was made possible with support from the European Union and Fundacion Triangulo from Spain.
"It is an honor for me to participate in this First National Meeting of Parents to be held in Paraguay and I sincerely hope that this is not the last," said Marcela Ordenes, giving closure to the meeting.
For every human being, the household in which it grows is essential. SOMOSGAY promotes education and information to fight homophobia, and recognizes the importance of providing spaces where families can meet, share their experiences and learn about the ways we can provide support for their LGBT family.
