To celebrate the month of youth in Paraguay and the first anniversary of the organization of lesbian women in Paraguay, the members of SOMOSGAY and LESVOS gathered the first edition of the "Rainbow Festival", on Saturday September 13th. For this activity, the Independencia Nacional street was closed between Jejuí and Manduvirá, across the Municipal Market.
The event started at 5pm with a fair that included clothes, accessories, food and artisanal beverages. The urban artist Oz Montanía was present, live painting and presenting several of his most recent works, with a touch of street art in Paraguay.
The rappers Léxico y Alas Melody began the concert at around 8:30pm. Alejandra Rivarola and Vanessa Hütter performed a moving musical presentation. Fabu Olmedo, a Paraguayan known pop artist, was also present playing his songs. Then the group SquarePants came to the stage to turn the music into a punk rock festival.
The members of LESVOS thanked the audience and the support received for an entire year. In addition, Monica Encina, director of the organization, offered a few words: "Today, we respond to hatred with love and pride. A year ago we started this path of struggle towards equality, overcoming various obstacles and acts of repression such as the one that we lived during the General Assembly of the OAS months ago. But we became stronger than ever. At the LGBT Community Center, along with SOMOSGAY and Diversa, we will work for lesbian women in Paraguay that deserve a decent life, claiming their rights and not being afraid to take the streets. We know that in this country we come from a long history of authoritarianism, and lesbians as of today will not allow for dictatorship again either today, tomorrow or ever again. "
Las Violetas, with Gea Cáceres and Juanca Otaño, performed folk themes in their presentation. Rolando Chaparro with Cacho Montes gave their support to the event with their songs. And to end the concert, the group Pirakutú joined the musicians to perform their songs.
SOMOSGAY and LESVOS thank the people who took part in this celebration for a Paraguay where young people are free to express their sexual orientation and gender identity and find a place where they feel safe and free.
