To commemorate the International Women's Day, SOMOSGAY organized a series of events under the week called “Kuña’i” (“little girl” in guarani), with a number of free activities for all age groups. To kick off the week, on Tuesday, March 3, the screening of short films and discussion called "Women in the Paraguayan Cinema" was held in the headquarters of the National Archives of Asuncion, with the presence of Ana Martini, Director of the Bicentennial House of Visual Arts, Manuel Cuenca, journalist and film producer and Dahia Valenzuela, sound technologist, who discussed with the auditorium the national short films "Out Gorda" (Tana Schémbori) and "Recycled Life (Daniela Candia), as well as the screening of short films of students of the Integral Acting Workshop, followed by a discussion on the role of women in the film world and the areas of production, script, editing and direction. "Definitely, the arduous task of this movement calls us to continue generating these spaces for reflection and discussion about the new feminism paradigms in our country," mentioned the activist Sergio Lopez.
On Thursday, March 5, the HBO film "Iron Jawed Angels" was also screened at the headquarters of the LGBT Community Center, and based on true events, the documentary-film follows the historical struggle of activists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns to achieve the right to vote for women in the United States; revolutionizing the feminist movement worldwide.
On Friday March 6, the "Gender-based Violence and Responses from the State and the Community" panel was held in the Bicameral Hall of the Paraguayan National Congress, with the distinguished presence of the Deputy and President of Socialist Party, Rocío Casco, Josefina Duarte, President of the Revolutionary Party and Criss Alfonso, representative of LESVOS. "The violence towards women is based on a system of social and cultural inequalities, and this violence shows its macabre face in our day-to-day lives. Today, more than ever, the adoption of laws on comprehensive protection for women is crucial to achieve an egalitarian society" said lesbian activist Alfonso during her speech.
To close the week, a special edition of the Fresh Friday, a permanent after-office space organized by SOMOSGAY, took place on Friday night, March 6, with the presence of Abuela DJ, Marlene Sautu, who shared her loaded playlists with attendees to fill the LGBT Community Center with a party full of dance, joy and claims.
With these activities, SOMOSGAY seeks to eradicate violence against women in our country and further progress in the formulation of public policies and specialized care services for all women in Paraguay.
