The LGBT Community Center was the location for the signing of the Interagency Cooperation Agreement between the Municipality of Asuncion and SOMOSGAY organization, on Wednesday afternoon, attended by the mayor of Asunción Mario Ferreiro, Simon Cazal, executive director of SOMOSGAY, the Congresswoman Rocío Casco and councilor Rodrigo Buongermini.
This Interagency Cooperation Agreement aims to develop actions in the areas of training and information on health and prevention, responsible behavior, gender equality, respect for human rights for the benefit of the Municipal Institution and citizenship in general.
For the opening ceremony, Simon Cazal gave the following words: "I thank the Mayor Mario Ferreiro for taking this historic step. Is the first time that the City of Asuncion is clearly committed to responding to a series of problems that all citizens in some way or another suffer in the city. The signing of this agreement is not an act that only benefit the LGBT community, is a first step towards several actions that will bring benefits to all people of Asuncion. "
Respect to the agreement, Mario Ferreiro said: "I participated a few weeks ago in La Paz, Bolivia, at an Annual Assembly of the Union of Capital Cities of Latin America with mayors of almost all Latin and Central America, and I found it very important to know that they hold such conventions and very interesting and concrete actions to promote non-discrimination as a crosscutting work in their respective municipalities. "
"So today, more than signing an agreement, today I come to ratify my commitment to freedom, democracy and tolerance. I am very happy that identify me as the first mayor who signs an agreement of this kind with an organization that seriously expresses the need for an evolution in the sense of being more human and more tolerant” concluded the mayor of Asuncion.
Currently, the city of Asuncion and the Central Department are the regions of the country that carry the highest number of new HIV infections and STIs. Through this agreement, as part of the global campaign of cities against HIV, Asuncion would be added soon to cities like Paris, Montevideo, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, Rio and Santiago to sign a commitment to stop HIV by 2030.
These commitments focus on actions that seek to reduce the gap in access to treatment and HIV prevention through fixing, in turn, new goals for 2030. Thus, the Municipality of Asuncion with SOMOSGAY as a member of civil society, seek to address social problems such as homophobia, sexism and discrimination and formalize a cooperative alliance to define the tasks at all levels, especially those related to areas that serve the most vulnerable aspects.
