On Saturday 13 September on the esplanade of Paraguayan LGBT Community Center, opposite the Mercado Municipal No. 1 (Independencia Nacional 1032 casi Manduvirá), the Rainbow Festival will take place, commemorating the month of youth in Paraguay and LESVOS’ first anniversary as an organization.
For the event, the Independencia Nacional Street (between Jejuí and Manduvirá) will be closed from 9 am. to mount scenarios and the popular fair, available to all interested persons. The festival will feature the participation of distinguished and renowned Paraguayan artists and groups like Pirakutu, Rolando Chaparro; who in this 2014 celebrates 20 years of career, plus Squarepants, Rocking Grandma, among others. The festival will also count with the presence of street artist Oz Montanía, performing live street-art during the activity.
LESVOS, an organization of lesbian Paraguayan women who created a space to discuss, socialize and advance the construction of a society without homophobia, lesbophobia, sexism and inequality, will celebrate its first year of institutional life. "The macho culture is deeply rooted in our country and is primarily transmitted by the family, creating a doubly hostile climate for women, first by being female and second by being a lesbian. This is why the focus of our work as an organization is set to change those paradigms from those places where violence is part of intimacy: family, school, work, etc" says Monica Encina, spokeswoman to LESVOS.
According to the United Nations, young people represent the whole population between 15 and 24 years, meaning 18% of the total world population. Young people are a key factor in social change, economic development and technological progress. Their imagination, ideals, perspectives and energy are essential to the development of the societies in which they live.
SOMOSGAY, committed to empowering and strengthening diverse youth in order to ensure participation in decision making in search of the full exercise of their human rights and to provide a safe space for LGBT youth and where they feel free to express their sexual orientation and gender identity without fear, invites everyone to be part of this celebration for a country that is more egalitarian and free of homophobia.
