The Women's Minister-Secretary, Gloria Rubin, met with SOMOSGAY in the morning of October 2nd of 2009. In this opportunity the Minister reflected on the strong machismo that still affects the society and Paraguayan culture, and it's direct bond with the homophobia and violence with LGBT people.
On this matter, the Minister expressed that the social gabinet of the government seeks to face the inequality of gender, and therefore lack of equality in the power, generating spaces of reflection and analysis, at the same time, offering activities and services that help to involve the greatest number possible of people to reach full gender equality.
This occasion served for SOMOSGAY to present activities and plans to the minister, who expressed her commitment to support all of the initiatives that impulse the disarticulation of homophobia and machismo as a matrix for discrimination. In several moments it was a analyzed the difficult situation of women in our country, specially women in the poor urban and rural areas, like the need to pose a reflection more profound that leads to an extensive reform of the government's model, one that is more inclusive and less discriminatory.
In that sense, SOMOSGAY shares the critique presented by the minister to keep the actual secretariats of the social field independent and separated. The creation of a super ministry that spans all of them, will be a step back in the effective decentralization of the state apparatus and will favor the centralization of power and resources in only one minister, which will involve difficulties to the efficacy of the tasks in all of the affected secretariats.
In a casual conversation in guarani and Spanish at the same time, the minister agreed also to give an interview to Simon Cazal from SOMOSGAY, with who she spoke about plans and activities of the State Secretariat under her power.
SOMOSGAY restates its compromise for gender equality, as a strategy of disarticulation of homophobia in Paraguay.
