The movie “I hate aubergines”, created by OpusMúltipla for the Grupo Dignidade (Brazilian organization pioneer in the promotion of LGBT citizenship) was elected by Red Globo to integrate an action for the promotion of mutual respect transmitted in national television network (Brazil) from this month.
With the motto “It is not necessary to accept but you must respect”, the movie shows in an unusual way the importance to fight against intolerance of any kind and it teaches that respect is the best way of coping with differences.
The script presents a simple scene: a family dinner where the mother-in-law offers a dish with aubergines among the ingredients to the son-in-law. The young man, after saying he “hates augbergines”, he imagines himself commiting all kinds of atrocities against the vegetable, which is cruelly drowned, stabbed, trampled, hunted and exploited.
When returning to real life, a simple “no, thank you”, reinforces the correct form of dealing against what one does not agree. “I always thought it was suspicious how some people deal with differences, especially those regarding sexual orientation. What is the justification for a person to waste energy to attack, verbal or physically, to somebody who does not please his or her preferences? Maybe that person is not so sure of his or her options”, reflects Renato Cavalher, creator of the movie.
“It is obvious we cannot agree on the way of living of other people. I am in favor of all rights and justice. We must not discriminate. We must respect not only religion and color, but also sexual orientation,” remarks Toni Reis, Executive Director and Founder of Grupo Dignidade.
