On May 17 at 11:00 pm in the Plaza de Armas, opposite the Paraguayan National Congress, SOMOSGAY, LESVOS and LGBT Paraguayan Federation, with the support of the tegional network GayLatino, conducted the sixth edition of "Besatón 2016" in commemoration of the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia.

In social networks, all people who wish to join can do so by uploading a photo with their partners or loved ones with the Hashtag #BesatonPy, telling their love story about the most significant kiss they have shared.

The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia is commemorated on 17 May to remember homosexuality’s removal from the list of mental illnesses by the World Health Organization that day in 1990.

In Paraguay and in different parts of the world, homophobia is characterized by fear and disdain towards LGBT people. Hatred, discrimination and violence are the responses towards being gay (or being suspected) based upon negative stereotypes and misconceptions.

Even today, the idea of two people of the same sex kissing or holding hands in public spaces (squares, streets, shopping malls, etc.) is summarized in that they are violating the law or "breaking the moral code and good manners ". It is important to note that demonstrations of affection in public are not illegal, that there is no law stipulating a ban, but on the contrary, that Article 9 of our Constitution clearly states "Everyone has the right to be protected in their freedom and security. Nobody is forced to do what the law does not order nor deprived of what it does not prohibit ".

Love outdoors is one of the healthiest ways to fight towards equality. Visibility is not a crime nor showing love. Therefore we urge you to lose fear because there is no law prohibiting demonstrations of affection for one’s partner or any person of the same sex.

SOMOSGAY, LESVOS and the LGBT Paraguayan Federation thanks to this worldwide celebration carry out actions to eradicate discrimination in our society that LGBT young people face every day, looking for a Paraguay where love is free to all.
