In commemoration of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) on Friday May 17th SOMOSGAY conducted the Kiss-in. This activity was held in the main square opposite to the National Congress.

Sergio Lopez, current Director of the organization, during the colorful Kiss-in, commented on homophobia and discrimination on LGBT people who live in the Paraguayan society, families, schools or jobs. He explained that the initial barrier to take sexual orientation is the family, since in many cases there is even expulsion from the person in your household. He also noted that the decision to openly take sexual orientation is not something that only affects the person but to all members of the family, so it is very important to the comprehensive approach to the issue. "We recognize that the family must be a place primarily for protection, it is the first nest and core of socialization for us human beings, for that reason it has to be a place of respect and solidarity , no longer a place of demonstrations of hatred and intolerance as usual continue to see," he said.
Furthermore, it was attended by Rep. elected Rocío Casco, who told various members of the media that as a member of the new parliament, she will seek to combat discrimination of any kind and support equal marriage or other laws that contribute to equal rights for everyone. Also present and providing support for this activity were Dr. Ivan Allende, Health Manager of SOMOSGAY, Miguel Angel Auad (Petunia), representative of the Homosexual Community of Paraguay (CHOPA).
In addition to the marathon of kisses between gay, lesbian and heterosexual couples celebrated every year on the same day, the "Global Rainbow Flashmob," an colorful impromptu dance was performed simultaneously around the world.
On 17 May 1990 the World Health Organization (WHO ) stopped considering homosexuality as a mental illness but as a legitimate expression of human sexuality, which is why every year on this date the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) is celebrated.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said that while there were many advances in the fight against discrimination there is still much to be done for all people to be free, equal and respected."
Again, SOMOSGAY joins this global initiative to fight homophobia, sexism, inequality and violence remain in history and possible construction of a society free from discrimination and equal rights for everyone .
