On that occasion the Minister reflected on the strong machism that still affects society and culture of Paraguay, and their direct link to homophobia and violence against LGBT people. About this problem, the minister said that since the government’s social cabinet seeks to address gender inequality, and therefore power inequality, creating spaces for reflection and analysis, while offering activities and services that help involve as many people as possible in achieving full gender equality.

The occasion served to SOMOSGAY present its activities and plans to the minister, who pledged his support to all initiatives that promote the dismantling of homophobia and sexism as arrays of discrimination. At various times it was possible to analyze the plight of women in our country, especially the urban poor and rural women in our country and the need to raise a further reflection that leads to an extensive reform of the state model, to a more inclusive and less discriminative rol. In that sense, SOMOSGAY shares the view presented by the Minister to maintain existing social secretariats of independent and separate. The creation of a “super ministry” that includes them would be a decrease in the effective decentralization of government and favor the centralization of power and resources in a single ministry, which would raise serious problems in the effectiveness of the work of all ministries concerned.

In a pleasant conversation in Guaraní and Spanish alike, the minister also agreed to give an interview for Simon Cazal of SOMOSGAY, with whom he talked about plans and activities of the State Secretariat in charge.
