Saint Valentine’s celebration has roots in a legend where couples married secretly because of a Roman emperor’s prohibition. Every day we celebrate February 14th and this is the best opportunity to remember the diversity this powerful feeling evokes: in our families -that are unique each one of them- and our partners. As the legend teaches us: love triumphs over adversity.

In the first place, we make it clear that there is no cure for HIV yet. Nevertheless, we can be undetectable -when the number of virus in our blood is so low it cannot be measured. This can be achieved by treatment adherence, this is when we take daily our antiretroviral drugs under medical supervision. By being undetectable, our quality of life improves and we avoid transmitting the virus.

Carlos García de León is a gay mexican activist with a long career who visited SOMOSGAY last Wednesday January 25th to talk about some subjects that are not easy to deal with: bareback sex, recreational drugs and the latest technology to prevent HIV: PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis). García de León’s motto was: We need to question ourselves some things to change paradigms.
