"It's been several years that the LGBT theme is being included in novels, mini-series and feature films"

We get to know more about Jorge Puig: talented radio and television host who has worked very successfully for several years in national media. He talks about his passion for film and his upcoming projects. He also shares his opinion on homophobia, bullying and gay marriage. An interesting interview to one of the most important personalities of our country. The cultural shift towards a more inclusive society should be an integral part of the strategies from the city.

How would you describe Jorge Puig?

I consider myself a nice guy (although many say that I'm not that nice), but those that really know me know that I do anything to help and defend my friends, who are my chosen family. I like meeting my friends, and in fact, the common meeting place is always my home. I consider myself avid, cheerful and eager to love and be loved. In the world of communication I started at 18 and now I am 46, I mean I'm in the media for 28 years. I always say that today it is much easier to be in the media in relation to what it was before, it is still difficult to stay in the media.

I am currently at 92.3 FM Radio Cardinal in "La Movida" program and "La movida  RETRO" that has just turned 10 years on the air, also, I'm in charge of producing and conducting the blocks of arts and entertainment from Channel 13. I write on the arts and entertainment sections of the "Z" magazine and I'm in charge of the transfer of the cultural scene of the country through an audiotext system. I still make continuous presentation of events and I have recently returned to my old passion which is playing retro music at events.

The film, theater and television are telling stories of gay, lesbian and trans people.

For several years, a lot on this subject is being included in novels, mini-series and feature films. We agree that we consume much of European and American cinema, and they include this subject in almost every production. Now we also see this in Brazilian and Argentine telenovelas and therefore we can say that is an issue that has been installed in the media. For example, naming movies containing gay characters or topic per se would be endless, but there are movies ranging from PASOLINI from a movie called SALO: THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM from 1972, to the movies today.

"There are other members of the media that are openly homophobic and supposedly do not employ gays or lesbians, but have them on their staff"

>>

Is there such thing as homophobia and discrimination in the media in Paraguay?

There are some media in Paraguay that do not mix your private life with what you do in the company. There are other media that are openly homophobic and supposedly do not employ gays or lesbians, but have them on their staff. In any company you will surely find that someone is gay or lesbian, but I think one thing has nothing to do with the other, you can be an excellent professional and be gay.

What do yout think on the right that same sex couples have to marry in Paraguay?

Two friends were a couple for many years, lived a lifetime together, and when one of them died, the other was literally on the street, since the family took everything. It seems unfair that when the truth of them run out having built a life together, so I agree with gay marriage, especially to protect the assets that they have achieved together. Another benefit is health insurance or retirement which is accesible to any couple. Regarding the adoption there are many things said such as children living with gay parents or mothers being gay, remember that gay and lesbian came from heterosexual parents, right? The issue of adoption is a more complex issue, but I am sure that many children in the street, asking for money thrown at 3 in the morning, if they are adopted, would lead a completely different life.

In Paraguay, will equal marriage be possible?

Now is the season of presidential elections, let's see if future candidates for president are more open minded and give their support to gay marriage, as neighboring countries have accepted. Sooner or later they will have to accept it in Paraguay.

What's your take on the topic of homophobic bullying in schools?

This problem has always existed and of course you would have to take matters into schools across the country. Never kick a guy who is mocked, harassed and mistreated, teachers, principals, and guards should be on continuous alert to stop if such cases happen.

In the last few years, teenagers come out more naturally to their peers and parents?

The INTERNET made everything easier, technology brings us to the second with the latest in everything. Before that, everything was TABU, there were thousands of things that one could not even whisper, remember the famous lists that existed at the time of Stroessner.

How do you see Paraguay? What do you want for the future?

A little hard to visualize something with so much change in the government. All of them promise many things ... but like all of those who live in this country, I want a country with more and better life expectancy, which has resources for HEALTH, for education, there are more jobs and equal opportunities to all and to those above thinking of running a country and not bring water to their mill.
