As the appointed Youth Representative in the Latin American and Caribbean Delegation to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Sergio López (23) participates in the Board meeting on behalf of SOMOSGAY and the Youth Reference Group of MSMGF in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, from 26 to 27 April.

The Board brings together members and partners of the Global Fund to define the strategic guidelines to ensure the effectiveness of its programs in the various countries in which operates, while contributing to sustain joint efforts in the fight against the three diseases.

As part of previous discussions, it became clear once again the need to continue to contribute to the effective range of the Fund in its work with most-affected communities, under the premise that it is not enough to have effective numerical indicators but also to ensure access to healthcare services for gay men, transgender women, sex workers and drug users, populations that remain disproportionately affected by the impact of HIV in their communities.

After three days of pre-meetings and briefing sessions with committees and constituencies, the opening ceremony on Tuesday morning was attended by local authorities of the Government of Côte d'Ivoire with a call for greater involvement of decision makers in the discussions. "Although progress in recent years has been achieved, we still need greater involvement of parliamentarians in the processes of the Fund, with more leadership from authorities in national processes through the CCMs."

As part of the opening ceremony, LAC Board Member Dr. Mirta Roses proceeded with a symbolic candle-lighting in memory of the victims of these diseases and others that are no longer with us. “We want us all to remind how much human suffering is taking place in Ivory Coast and other parts of the world, and we would like to highlight the urge to overcome this critical moment as an inclusive and tolerant society and commit our efforts to avoid deepening hate and inequality as root causes of extremism, racism, sexism and anger. As part of the Public Health Community worldwide, and as a model on global partnership, we call to redouble efforts for inclusiveness and fighting for human rights recognition.”

Thus, SOMOSGAY actively engages in various global dialogues, building collective strategies to meet the 90-90-90 goals and the regional targets in Latin America. Along with the Youth Reference Group, it is also expected to achieve more active participation of young gay men and other at-risk youth in areas of decision making, especially in those where budgets and resource allocation are discussed regarding the "future of funding for HIV".

During this Board meeting, it is expected to discuss, review and adopt different policy documents. As particularly important decision points, the recommendations provided throughout consultations will be reviewed in relation to the new funding model, including the 2017-2022 strategy and resource-allocation methodology, as part of the guidelines and scope of work of the Global Fund.
