To commemorate the 479th anniversary of Asuncion city, SOMOSGAY, Lesvos and the Paraguayan LGBT Federation joined the celebrations by carrying out the Festival for Equality: “The party of everyone” last Saturday August 3rd. The Festival started at 16 hrs approximately in the Plaza de la Libertad (park opposite the Panteón de los Héroes) with a fair of handcrafts and food and several bands performing live music.

Artists reaffirming their compromise with equality as Pachín Centurión, Seismorocho, Tender Cage, Andrea Valobra, The Walkers, Fabu, Skylark Western and EEEKS were present (See pictures).

Mario Ferreiro, current major of Asuncion, gave some moving words during the event: “Asuncion has turned 479 years. We are going to defend joy and even if despair wants to win over us, that will not be possible. What happened in November last year was made by people, you, who are used to fighting and defending joy over sadness. As you all know, we have a very important convention with SOMOSGAY, a great step. We will continue with the emotion of having the center of Asuncion taken by citizens. There is an enormous amount of activities”

“Long live diversity and tolerance. I will surely be the subject of some comments in some reactionary places but that gives me strength because you give me strength”, ended the major.

Members of the self-named “Asunción de Colores” were present, gathering approximately 400 signatures to demand all people an equal treatment, respect to dignity and freedom to their expressions of affections. As it can be appreciated in the picture, major Mario Ferreiro listened to our concerns and signed to advance towards a kinder city to diversity.
The Festival for Equality was held the first time in 2010 with a lot of success. The festival was a response to the aggressive campaign “We want a dad and a mom” pursued by conservative sectors of our society who attacked the liberty and equality of all Paraguayan public.

SOMOSGAY thanks all people who were part of this celebration with the commitment of building a society where public spaces are free from discrimination and benefit all Paraguayans, men and women.
